See original paintings that capture the mood and thoughts of Whitman as he experiences the Civil War. Read Whitman's poetry, see how Whitman left home to find his wounded brother and write and illustrate poems. The companion exhibit, "Bold, Cautious, True: Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Era" has some 60 works including paintings, prints and sculpture from some of the most important American artists of the mid-19th century, including Frederic E. Church, Sanford Gifford, Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, John Frederick Kensett, and Worthington Whittredge.
