Cover the Court with Coins
“Cover the Court with Coins” Uses Small Change to Put Big Smiles on Children with Cancer. On Saturday, May 12, Sole Ryeders challenges the community to cover an entire tennis court at Rye Recreation with coins, the proceeds of which will be donated to The Pinwheel Project in support of children with cancer.

Participants can stop by Rye Recreation Tennis Courts, Midland Avenue, anytime between 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on May 12th, to place their coins on the court, or they can drop off their coins during the same time slot and a Sole Ryeders’ volunteer will put them on the court.   Rain date is June 2nd.
Volunteers will be available to assist younger children in placing their donated coins on the tennis court.

Other activities that will benefit children with cancer include community art projects, which will be used to decorate the hospital rooms of children undergoing bone marrow transplants and a bake sale, organized by youth volunteers.

Rye’s Citibank branch, premier event co-sponsor, will provide banks for children to use to collect their coins, beverages for the bake sale, and will assist in the counting of the coins.  The piggybanks can be picked up at Citibank starting on April 16th and will also be distributed at Rye Youth Soccer on Saturday May 5th and will be available as long as the supply lasts.

“Sole Ryeders encourages children to start saving their coins and parents to help show their children how small change can make a big difference in helping other children,” says Sandy Samberg, founder of Sole Ryeders.
Coin for Coin Partners: Sole Ryeders is encouraging individuals, families and local businesses to become ‘Coin for Coin Partners’.  Coin for Coin Partners donate any amount, which will help fund The Wig Exchange, a program that Sole Ryeders created to provide women undergoing chemotherapy with high quality wigs donated by cancer survivors. Donations will be used for the professional cleaning and reconditioning of the wigs that we receive so that we’re able to offer them to those in need. Sole Ryeders, founded in 2007, is a volunteer-driven community based organization that provides and supports local cancer-related programs. The name ‘Sole Ryeders’ stems from the founding members (who are residents of Rye, New York) and from the group’s annual participation in the 39 mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The organization, which has included over 200 passionate and dedicated individuals since inception, has raised more than $1,000,000.

The Pinwheel Project provides hospitalized children and their families with practical help, emotional support, and a reason to smile.  Most of the children that they serve are being treated for cancer.
