Rye Historical Society Luncheon
The Rye Historical Society is pleased to announce that its history luncheon on Thursday, March 8th, will feature noted author and historian Barnet Schecter who will speak about the turbulent events that occurred on the streets of New York City, just nine days after the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

This annual history lunch will be held at the American Yacht Club in Rye on March 8, 2012, with check-in beginning at 11:30 am. Following check-in, attendees will have time to browse and shop specialty boutique vendor selections.  Luncheon will begin promptly at 12:15 pm and the presentation will begin at 1:15 pm.  Vendors will re-open after the presentation for additional shopping time.

Barnet Schecter is an independent historian and author of a number of books, including The Devil’s Own Work: The Civil War Draft Riots and the Fight to Reconstruct America.  In this book the author places the New York City draft riots of July 1863 within the context of the Civil War and the local context of ethnic, racial, and political conflicts during the decades from 1840s to the 1870s, with a particular focus on the experience of New York’s African American community during this turbulent period.  Mr. Schecter holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.F.A. from Queens College, CUNY.  In addition to lecturing and leading tours, his writing has appeared in The Times Literary Supplement (London), The New York Observer, The Village Voice and other publications.

Individual tickets are available for $60 and a table of 8 is $450.  Proceeds of this event benefit the educational and programming activities of the Rye Historical Society.
