Rye Historical Society Harvesting Honey
On Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 2:00 pm the Knapp House garden at 265 Rye Beach Ave. in Rye, NY will be “buzzing” with activity.  Gardeners, nature lovers, conservationists and locavores are invited to a program presented by beekeeper Ray DuBois.  Mr. DuBois will discuss the importance of honey bees to our environment and our daily lives.  Attendees will also learn how honey is harvested and have an opportunity to taste the sweet harvest!

Back in May of this year the Rye Historical Society and the Little Garden Club of Rye collaborated on a project to install beehives as part of the Little Garden Club’s creation of a Kitchen Herb Garden on the terrace of the Knapp House.  On May 7th Mr. DuBois installed two queen bees and several thousand workers and drones in two hives.  Now on Saturday, September 24, visitors can hear and taste the result of the busy Knapp House bees.

The program is free but attendees are invited to make a donation to the non-profit organization BeeLove.org which Mr. DuBois established “to develop a sustainable, genetically diverse local population of honeybees while raising the public’s awareness of these amazing creatures”.  A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

The Knapp House, ca. 1670, is located at 265 Rye Beach Ave. in Rye, NY and houses the Rye Historical Society’s vast archival collection of historic maps, manuscripts, photographs and books.  It is open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  The Society’s Square House Museum at 1 Purchase St. in Rye is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
