THE RYE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Birth of Rye Town Park

June 20- Dec. 30, 2009 at the Knapp House

The Rye Historical Society is pleased to announce a new exhibition, The Birth of Rye Town Park, which commemorates the creation of Rye Town Park 100 years ago.  The exhibit is open to the public at the Society’s Knapp House Archives located at 265 Rye Beach Avenue in Rye, NY and will run through November 30th.  The Knapp House is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9am to 4pm.  Admission to the exhibition is free, with donations gratefully accepted.

Through archival newspapers, postcards, photographs and murals, the exhibit brings to life the debates and controversies that surfaced in 1893 when several prominent Westchester citizens first proposed the creation of a public park on desirable shore land on Long Island Sound.  Through visual representations, visitors will be able to examine the proposed location of the park and how the area and landscape of this public space have evolved in the 100 years since
