MLK Day of Service

To mark the 25th anniversary of the federal King holiday, the Volunteer Center of United Way will join the national MLK Day of Service—part of President Obama’s nationwide service initiative—by launching a day of volunteering in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
On Saturday, Jan. 15, more than 250 corporate and community volunteers will participate in service initiatives in Westchester and Putnam counties, including projects helping young people, seniors and environmental efforts.

Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle
Volunteers are needed to clean out and prepare one of the buildings for the agency's new Kids Café and Club renovation. Must be 18 years or older. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Beautify Green Chimneys (Brewster)
Volunteers needed to paint an office and classroom at the Green Chimneys campus in Brewster. Green Chimneys is a non-profit organization helping children with emotional, learning, social or behavioral issues through animal and nature-based therapeutic activities. Must be 18 or older. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Save the Trees with Groundwork Hudson Valley (Hastings)
Volunteers will work on the environmental group Groundwork’s “Free-A-Tree” project to remove invasive vines on trees and clean up at the Farragut Avenue Restoration Site. Age 18 or older; 12 or older with an adult. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
New Rochelle Public Library
Volunteers will participate in “shifting” and organizing books to help with overcrowding on shelves, and possibly painting a classroom. Age 18 or older. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Card Making for Soldiers at Operation Quiet Comfort (Tarrytown)
Volunteers will create cards which will be added to care packages for sick and injured military men and women. Age 16 and up; no age limit with adult present. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Park Avenue Elementary School (Port Chester)
Adult volunteers will work with children on a variety of Martin Luther King, Jr. themed learning activities. Age 18 and up. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Peekskill Volunteer Day with Peekskill Youth Bureau
Volunteers will meet at the Peekskill Youth Bureau and assigned to one of four activities.
· Serving lunch at the Salvation Army's soup kitchen.
· Preparing sandwiches for a Midnight Run
· Painting the main activity room in the youth bureau (Peekskill).
· Hosting a tea and dessert hour at a local senior housing center.
Age 18 and over; 12 and older with adult. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Working with Homeless Children at Westhab (White Plains)
Adult volunteers will work with children on various Martin Luther King Jr. activities, including building an "I Have a Dream” mobile, putting together a MLK puzzle, and others. Age 18 and over. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Inspire Boys Ages 6-12 at the White Plains Youth Bureau
Volunteers will watch a film with the youth and participate in a follow-up discussion about Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers and students will then create a collage about conflict resolution. Age 18 and up. From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
