Canavan disease is a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects children at birth. Jacob (age 14) was diagnosed in 1996 at six months of age. Children with Canavan Disease become trapped in their bodies, develop seizures, lose their ability to see and swallow and die in the first decade of life. The research funded by Jacob's Cure since 2000 has slowed or halted the progression of the disease in most of the children who received gene therapy and have begun the recommended treatments. While there is currently no cure, we believe we are closing in on one. The research we are currently funding may very well revolutionize the manner in which "white matter" neurological disease, such as Parkinson's, MS and ALS, are treated and will be a model for their cure.
