Charming Thimbles

One of Suzy's favorite summer family adventures is a trip to the Thimble Islands.
Head north on I-95 and you'll see a small indistinct brown sign that you've probably driven by a thousand times never taking notice. Just this one time... follow it.
The sign is located at Exit 56 at the Stony Creek off ramp and it reads "Thimble Islands". The name derived from the thimbleberry that used to abundantly grow throughout the islands. The Thimbles have been described as " a piece of the Maine coast that drifted into Long Island Sound and came to rest at Stony Creek".
Locals say the are somewhere between 100-365 islands, in all depending on the tides. About 25 of the islands are inhabited. Some have electricity, some use only propane to illuminate the night.
A great way to see the islands is by boat tour on either the Sea Mist or the Volsunga IV Thimble Islands caught right at Stony Creek. Sit back and listen to truth and lore. Stories of hurricanes, presidents, Captain Kidd and hidden treasure. A more intimate voyage can be found by contacting Connecticut Coastal Kayaking CT Coastal Kayaking.
